Organic White Tea
White tea comes from the fine silvery-white hairs on the unopened buds of the tea plant (some people simply describe this as the “hair” of the immature tea leaves). White tea usually requires only minimal processing: the immature leaves from the tea bush are plucked fresh and the tea leaves are withered by air-drying, solar-drying, or mechanical drying. Then you are left with white tea.
The white tea beverage itself is not white or colorless but instead has a slightly yellow or very pale yellow color. Its flavor is very mild compared to black tea and green tea and is sometimes described as sweet and silky. White tea lacks the “grassy” aftertaste so often associated with green tea, which has a much stronger taste than white tea.
White tea contains a high amount of antioxidants, as well as polyphenols, flavonoids, and tannins. These nutritional benefits have a positive effect on our health and well being.
White tea has been shown to protect the body against certain diseases and reduce the risk of cancer and cardiovascular disorders. It also provides natural antibacterial properties, helps with weight loss, and can lower bad cholesterol. Some studies suggest that white tea may increase the antioxidant effects of your bodily organs as well as increase your plasma.
Because of the high percentage of antioxidant properties, white tea can also help to repair and maintain your skin and protect the skin against the effects of ultraviolet light. This light beverage also can slow down the aging process and reduce the risk of premature aging.
Organic Matricaria Flower Extract
An extract derived from the Matricaria (Chamomilla Recutita) plant, a white and yellow annual flower with an aromatic smell that is native to parts of Europe and Asia, but can now be found in North America and Australia as well. As the name implies, it is a common source for the herbal treatment chamomile lotion, however it is not the only source.
The medicinal benefits of Matricaria extract have been known for thousands of years. Historically it has been used internally as a tonic to help calm the stomach, and applied topically to sooth irritated and inflamed skin.
Matricaria flower extract has natural healing and skin protective properties. It contains tannic acid, a substance commonly found in creams, sun creams, eye lotions and antiperspirants, and has natural astringent and skin calming properties.
Recent research has shown that chamomile has antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory and some antimutagenic properties. Chamomile has also demonstrated moderate antimicrobial, antiviral and antioxidant properties. Combined, these help matricaria extract speed healing and promote overall skin health. When used twice daily, a recent study has shown that a chamomile compress is as effective as hydrocortisone ointment in treating skin lesions.
Common Concerns
Matricaria Flower Extract is considered to be extremely safe and a non-irritant when applied topically. Some individuals who have an allergy to, or are sensitive to, the Asteraceae/Compositae plant (ragweed, chrysanthemums, marigolds, etc.) may have an allergic reaction.
There are a few risks associated with the consumption of chamomile, including interaction with some medications, especially those for blood thinners, nausea and vomiting, and may possibly cause miscarriage in pregnancy. However, in most of these cases, risk only occurs from consuming very large quantities of chamomile. The chamomile used in LUSU Vital Essence products is only applied topically and is found in much smaller concentrations. If you have any medical concerns, please consult your healthcare practitioner.
Organic Sesame Seed Oil
Sesame oil is derived from the seeds of the flowering sesame plant, also known as Sesamum indicum. These plants are native to East Africa and India, but they’re currently grown in many countries around the world.
Due to its hearty, nutty flavor and its high levels of mono- and polyunsaturated fats, sesame oil has become one of the most popular oils for cooking.
Sesame oil has the following properties, which help to make it a beneficial oil for your skin:
Antioxidant. This means it has the ability to fight damage by free radicals, or unstable molecules that can harm the cellular structure of your skin.
Antimicrobial. This means it can kill harmful microorganisms or stop their growth.
Anti-inflammatory. This means it can reduce inflammation and swelling.
Sesame oil also has a moderately low rating on the comedogenic scale. This unofficial database ranks different oils and butters by their pore-clogging properties. The scale ranges from zero to five.
A rating of zero means that an oil won’t clog your pores, while a rating of five means that it will.

Coconut oil is a highly saturated oil that is traditionally made by extracting the oil from raw coconuts or dried coconut kernels.
It's rich in saturated fat and medium-chain fatty acids, especially lauric acid; The fatty acids found in coconut oil have antimicrobial properties that effectively kill bacteria and fungi.
The anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties of coconut oil and its components could help treat acne. A 2014 animal and test-tube study showed that both lauric and capric acid were successful in reducing inflammation and preventing acne by killing off bacteria.
Coconut oil can be an effective moisturizer and aid in the treatment of dry skin and eczema.
A study comparing the effects of olive oil and coconut oil in 52 adults with eczema found that applying coconut oil helped reduce dryness, in addition to helping treat eczema.
Another study found similar results, showing that coconut oil led to a 68% decrease in eczema severity, making it significantly more effective than mineral oil in the treatment of eczema.
Animal studies have shown that coconut oil may help accelerate wound healing.
One animal study looked at how coconut oil applied to the skin affected wound healing in rats.
It found that treating the wounds with virgin coconut oil sped up healing, improved antioxidant status and increased levels of collagen, an important protein that aids in wound healing.
Another animal study showed that coconut oil combined with an antibiotic applied to the skin was effective at healing burn wounds.
Coconut oil could potentially clog pores. Using a small amount and slowly testing your tolerance to it is recommended for those with oily or sensitive skin.
Virgin coconut oil may be a better choice than refined coconut oil, given that it provides added health benefits like improved antioxidant status.
The results of these two studies indicate that virgin coconut oil may be more effective than refined coconut oil at preventing oxidation and neutralizing free radicals, which can damage cells and lead to inflammation and disease.

Externally, Plantain has been used for insect and snake bites, and as a remedy for rashes and cuts. I use it in making my Homemade Healing Salve, which we use as a natural antibiotic ointment on cuts and bruises.
Its natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties make it great for speeding recover of wounds, and for itching or pain associated with skin problems. A tea made from the leaf leaf can be sprayed on mosquito bites to ease the itch.
Plantain Precautions
Plantain is good for injuries because of its coagulating properties, but those with blood disorders or prone to blood clots should not use Plantain internally. If harvesting it yourself, make sure to get from an area that has not been sprayed with any chemicals or pesticides and make sure that you have correctly identified the plant before consuming.
Cacao
Here’s the simplest way to explain it. Cacao is the raw form of cacao beans. Cacao trees produce cacao pods; inside the pods are the beans. How those beans are harvested and dried determines whether it is cacao or cocoa. Cacao is the raw form of cacao beans. When they are roasted and ground, they become cocoa. Both cocoa and cacao are used in the production of chocolate.
So now you understand why cacao is used instead of cocoa in your favorite skincare products–it maintains all of those powerful antioxidants that are wonderful for enriching your skin with the nutrients it needs. Here are a few more reasons why you might want to consider products or at-home treatments using cacao:
-
It’s rich in antioxidants called flavenoids, which block harmful free radials, protecting your skin and smoothing fine lines.
-
The omega-6 fatty acids promote cellular healing, provide hydration, give skin that plump, dewy appearance and can help heal scars.
-
The vitamin C and magnesium content protect your skin.
-
Cacao, like coffee, promotes blood flow to the skin, which promotes that healthy glow.
-
It protects skin from harmful UV rays, which is key for maintaining the appearance of youthful skin.
-
It has potent anti-inflammatory properties, which can soothe redness and diminish the appearance of blemishes.

Most people toss orange peels in the garbage without a second thought. But did you know that orange peels contain nutrients and phytonutrients that are extremely beneficial to the skin and can heal many skin conditions? In fact, orange peel extract is an ingredient in many beauty products today because of its effectiveness in brightening skin and reducing acne.
Vitamin C: Did you know that orange peels actually contain way more vitamin C than the orange pulp itself?
Vitamin C not only combats free radicals that destroy functioning skin cells but also helps add a glowing shine to your skin, which makes orange peels a potent beauty product for skin.
Calcium: You may be surprised to discover that calcium is actually very good for your skin, but it’s true! It contributes in renewing worn out skin cells and preventing DNA damage.
Dietary fiber: Orange peels are a rich source of dietary fiber, particularly pectin.

Besides preventing irritable bowel syndrome, dietary fiber also helps prevent blood sugar levels from peaking immediately after a meal. The most important thing to note is that dietary fiber can only be gotten through your diet—vitamin supplements do not contain fiber.
Fir Needle
Fir needle essential oil benefits are derived from fir trees – yes, the popular Christmas tree species! As a member of the pine family, fir (Abies) are evergreen trees with flat needles and raised cones. Within the category of fir, there are dozens of subspecies. Some of the more prominent varieties include Spanish, white, balsam, and silver firs.
Historically, the wood and resin of fir trees have been used for varying purposes. The wood was burned for aromatic and cleansing rituals. Because a plant’s resin is the substance it releases to seal and protect a wound, the resin was used for healing and cleansing as well. Today, the resin of firs and other pine family trees can be distilled to create an oil called turpentine that carries its fir needle essential oil benefits.

Nutritious for Skin. Jojoba is full of nutrients like Vitamin E and B, as well as antioxidants and minerals like chromium, copper, and zinc, which all nourish and protect skin. Organic, cold-pressed, jojoba oil has the highest level of antioxidants and nutrients.
Anti–Aging. Because it is the perfect moisturizer, Jojoba can help slow down the appearance of aging, and help to fade fine lines and wrinkles. In dermatological tests, it was shown that jojoba oil increases the skin's suppleness and the effect was still present as time passed. Tests also showed continued use of Jojoba oil resulted in reducing superficial facial lines.
Non-Acnegenic. Because Jojoba oil is very similar to human skin oils, its use can trick the skin into thinking it has produced enough oil and thus balance oil production, without promoting acne or other skin problems. Jojoba also naturally deters microbes, helping to prevent the growth of bacteria on skin.
Easy, Not Greasy. Because Jojoba oil is very similar to our own skin oils, it immediately penetrates skin and soothes easily, helping to promote healthy, glowing skin without clogging pores or leaving a greasy residue.

Comfrey Root
Comfrey (Symphytum officinale) is sometimes used on the skin to treat wounds and reduce inflammation from sprains and broken bones. Comfrey roots and leaves contain allantoin, a substance that helps new skin cells grow, along with other substances that reduce inflammation and keep skin healthy. Comfrey ointments have been used to heal bruises as well as pulled muscles and ligaments, fractures, sprains, strains, and osteoarthritis.
In the past, comfrey was also used to treat stomach problems. However, it has toxic substances called pyrrolizidine alkaloids that damage the liver and can lead to death. Comfrey is no longer sold in the U.S., except in creams or ointments. The United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and Germany also have banned the sale of oral products containing comfrey.
The dangerous substances in comfrey are also absorbed through the skin, so harmful amounts may build up in the body. Be careful if you use an ointment containing comfrey (see How to Take It section), and never use comfrey on broken skin.

Oats
Grains from the cereal plant, Avena Sativa, are called oats. Once harvested, these grains are either used as animal feed, skin products or food.
Oatmeal can come in handy for a host of your skin and beauty needs. Oatmeal can soak up the excess oil on your skin and help treat acne. Its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties help to treat dry skin and remove dead skin cells.
It can help remove the dirt and oil that clog the pores. Oats also contain compounds called saponins, which are natural cleansers. Black heads are nothing but clogged pores on your skin. Oatmeal helps to unclog the pores and gives you a smooth and clear skin.
Itching is mostly caused due to inflammation under the skin or when the skin's pH level is high. Oatmeal helps to normalize your skin's pH levels, which helps to restore your skin's natural pH and soften the dry skin. It also protects the skin from external irritants, by lending moisture to the skin.
Now you know that oatmeal's saponins have intense exfoliating properties. It helps in removal of the oldest dead skin cells on the skin's outermost surface, and gives you a fresh, glowing and youthful skin.
Organic Borage Oil
Borage Oil is a little-known secret for keeping your skin healthy. It is a natural oil that not only restores moisture and smoothness to dry and damaged skin but can also provide relief to people who suffer from chronic skin disorders such as eczema and atopic dermatitis.
There is ample evidence from research on both humans and animals showing that Borage oil has a significant effect on improving the health and appearance of skin tissue. Clinically Borage Oil has been shown to be a very effective agent for treating skin disorders and for alleviating the inflammatory symptoms associated with these disorders. For everyday use, Borage oil has been shown to be very effective in treating the redness, inflammation and moisture loss associated with dry skin.
Whether you take Borage Oil orally or apply it to your skin it appears to positively affect the texture, suppleness and moisture content of skin.
Not only is Borage Oil excellent for your skin when taken internally but there is also more than enough evidence showing that when applied topically to your skin Borage Oil has the same positive effects on clearing up various skin disorders.
A very interesting experiment measured the effects of skin creams containing Borage oil on dry or damaged skin. Twenty healthy subjects who had either dry, but otherwise normal skin, or else had surfactant induced dry, scaly skin were tested over 14 days. Results indicated that the cream containing the Borage Oil was superior in restoring moisture and smoothness to both the dry skin as well as the surfactant damaged skin. This experiment was interpreted as strong evidence for the role that Borage Oil plays in restoring the intracellular moisture barrier of adult skin that is either chronically dry or has been environmentally damaged.

Castor Oil
Castor oil is a multi-purpose vegetable oil that people have used for thousands of years.
It’s made by extracting oil from the seeds of the Ricinus communis plant.
These seeds, which are known as castor beans, contain a toxic enzyme called ricin. However, the heating process that castor oil undergoes deactivates it, allowing the oil to be used safely.
Castor oil has a number of medicinal, industrial and pharmaceutical uses.
It's commonly used as an additive in foods, medications and skin care products, as well as an industrial lubricant and biodiesel fuel component.
A Powerful Laxative
It’s classified as a stimulant laxative, meaning that it increases the movement of the muscles that push material through the intestines, helping clear the bowels.
Stimulant laxatives act rapidly and are commonly used to relieve temporary constipation.
When consumed by mouth, castor oil is broken down in the small intestine, releasing ricinoleic acid, the main fatty acid in castor oil. The ricinoleic acid is then absorbed by the intestine, stimulating a strong laxative effect
A Natural Moisturizer
Castor oil is rich in ricinoleic acid, a monounsaturated fatty acid.
These types of fats act as humectants and can be used to moisturize the skin.
Humectants retain moisture by preventing water loss through the outer layer of the skin
Castor oil is thick, so it’s frequently mixed with other skin-friendly oils like almond, olive and coconut oil to make an ultra-hydrating moisturizer.
Castor oil can help lock moisture in the skin. Though this natural alternative to store-bought products is considered safe for most, it can cause allergic reactions in some.
Promotes Wound Healing- Applying castor oil to wounds creates a moist environment that promotes healing and prevents sores from drying out.
Castor oil stimulates tissue growth so that a barrier can be formed between the wound and the environment, decreasing the risk of infection.
Castor oil helps heal wounds by stimulating the growth of new tissue, reducing dryness and preventing the buildup of dead skin cells.
Impressive Anti-Inflammatory Effects- Ricinoleic acid, the main fatty acid found in castor oil, has impressive anti-inflammatory properties.
Studies have shown that when castor oil is applied topically, it reduces inflammation and relieves pain.
The pain-reducing and anti-inflammatory qualities of castor oil may be particularly helpful to those with an inflammatory disease such as rheumatoid arthritis or psoriasis.
Reduces Acne
Acne is a skin condition that can cause blackheads, pus-filled pimples and large, painful bumps on the face and body.
Inflammation is thought to be a factor in the development and severity of acne, so applying castor oil to the skin may help reduce inflammation-related symptoms
Acne is also associated with an imbalance of certain types of bacteria normally found on the skin, including Staphylococcus aureus
Castor oil has antimicrobial properties that may help fight bacterial overgrowth when applied to the skin.
Castor oil helps fight inflammation, reduce bacteria and soothe irritated skin, all of which can be helpful for those looking for a natural acne remedy.
Fights Fungus
Candida albicans is a type of fungus that commonly causes dental issues like plaque overgrowth, gum infections and root canal infections
Castor oil has antifungal properties and may help fight off Candida, keeping the mouth healthy.
Castor oil may also help treat denture-related stomatitis, a painful condition thought to be caused by Candida overgrowth. This is a common issue in elderly people who wear dentures.
Several studies have shown that castor oil may help fight fungal infections in the mouth caused by Candida albicans.
Keeps Your Hair and Scalp Healthy- Many people use castor oil as a natural hair conditioner.
Dry or damaged hair can especially benefit from an intense moisturizer like castor oil.
Applying fats like castor oil to the hair on a regular basis helps lubricate the hair shaft, increasing flexibility and decreasing the chance of breakage
Castor oil may benefit those who experience dandruff, a common scalp condition characterized by dry, flaky skin on the head.
Though there are many different causes of dandruff, it has been linked to seborrhoeic dermatitis, an inflammatory skin condition that causes red, scaly patches on the scalp
Due to castor oil’s ability to reduce inflammation, it may be an effective treatment for dandruff that is caused by seborrhoeic dermatitis.
Plus, applying castor oil to the scalp will help moisturize dry, irritated skin and may help reduce flaking.
Summary
The moisturizing and anti-inflammatory properties of castor oil make it an excellent option to keep hair soft and hydrated and help reduce dandruff symptoms.
Castor oil can cause side effects, such as allergic reactions and diarrhea, in some people. It can also induce labor, so pregnant women should avoid it.
Cranberry Seed Oil
The seeds can also be cold pressed to extract the oil, which produces golden or yellow oil that has an amazing fruity aroma. So, what are cranberries good for? A great deal it turns out. Is cranberry juice good for skin? Not necessarily, but the fruit itself can provide many benefits.
Cranberries, being high in antioxidants, are very useful in skin care because they can protect the skin from environmental stress. Willow Bark
Derived from the bark of the willow tree, Willow Bark Extract has been used for centuries to soothe irritated skin. Containing salicin—from which salicylic acid is derived—this versatile ingredient is both anti-inflammatory and antibacterial, clearing pores and alleviating acne and irritation.
Although there are various types of willow trees, each with their own unique extracts, Willow Bark Extract used in skin care products is usually derived from white willow bark. As the nomenclature implies, white extract comes from the white willow tree (salix alba), a medium- to large-sized perennial deciduous species. (Black and white willow extract are frequently used interchangeably in beauty products, but for our purposes, we’ll be focusing on the salicin-rich white willow extract.) After harvesting, during which strips of the willow bark are removed from the tree, the inner bark is processed to remove the beneficial aqueous extract. Aside from skin care, this extract can also be used for various medicinal and minor-pain-relieving purposes.
So how will Willow Bark Extract benefit my skin?

Avocado Oil
The absorbent oil is thought to have numerous benefits for your skin, like moisturizing dry hands or acting as a natural sunblock. You can apply avocado oil directly to your skin or mix it with your favorite beauty products.
The antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents in avocado oil help your skin stay smooth, strong, and elastic. You can buy avocado oil in any health or grocery store and use it to:
calm itchy skin
heal chapped skin
replenish dry skin
hydrate and moisturize skin
shield skin from ultraviolet radiation
protect against skin damage
Some people may refer to avocado oil as an essential oil, but that's not entirely accurate. Thick and green-colored, avocado oil is actually considered a carrier oil.
Essential oils are highly concentrated lubricants distilled from the aromatic parts of a plant such as the root or leaves. Carrier oils are pressed from the seeds, nuts, or other fatty parts of the fruit, and are used to help dilute essential oils. Essential oils evaporate and have strong scents, whereas carrier oils do not.
The main benefits of avocado oil are to soothe and add moisture, so it won't work as well if you have oily skin. Using avocado oil won't leave a lot of grease behind.

Menthol
When applied topically to the skin, ingested, or inhaled, menthol produces a cooling sensation. Menthol does not lower the temperature of the body or skin. Instead, it produces a cooling effect by blocking the calcium current along the nerves responsible for detecting temperature. The message that the individual receives via the nerve endings is that the skin or body is cooling.
Menthol’s ability to produce a cooling sensation on the skin makes it an extremely useful ingredient in after sun creams and lotions, which are designed to be applied to the skin after exposure to the sun. Menthol alleviates the hot, painful sensation that overexposure to the sun can trigger and can also found in products that can be applied topically to the forehead to ease the pain associated with headaches, such as cooling patches. Many people find menthol’s cooling sensation to be uplifting and invigorating. As a result it is used as an ingredient in toiletries and skin care products that are designed to refresh, revitalize, and enliven the skin.
Menthol also has pain-relieving properties when applied topically. It is particularly beneficial in alleviating the pain associated with minor musculoskeletal problems, such as arthritis, sprains, or muscle cramps. Menthol can be combined with ibuprofen in pain relieving gels and creams that are designed to be applied topically.
Menthol increases the effectiveness of certain topically applied medicines by enlarging the blood vessels in a process known as vasodilation. This allows the medicines to penetrate deep in to the affected area.
When applied to the thin skin on the lips, menthol also improves the flow of blood to the area, causing a temporary plumping effect. As a result, menthol is often included as an ingredient in lip products that aim to produce fuller lips without surgical intervention. These include balms and lip glosses that color the lips while producing a well-defined pout.
Aloe Vera (Juice/Gel)
Aloe Vera Gel and Aloe Vera Juice are extracted from the leaves of the Aloe Vera plant.
An Aloe Vera leaf consists of two parts: the gel and the juice. Although the gel and the liquid share similar benefits and can both be used directly and safely on the skin, they are not identical substances and have distinct properties.
Used cosmetically, Aloe Vera Juice can hydrate, exfoliate, nourish, clarify, and revitalize the skin and hair. It helps protect the skin and hair before and after the harmful effects of UV radiation, and it works to repair the damage. It also helps to prevent and diminish the appearance of wrinkles, acne, psoriasis, and dermatitis. It moisturizes without leaving skin and hair with a greasy residue and it helps fade tans and stretch marks.
Used in massage applications, Aloe Vera Juice is reputed to soothe muscular aches, joint pain, inflammation, wounds, burns, frostbite, and infections. It is also believed to stimulate skin regeneration, enhance energy, and promote the development of muscles.
Used medicinally, Aloe Vera Juice works to eliminate bodily toxins, increase the body’s antioxidant activity, balance digestive fluid, and enhance the body’s ability to absorb nutrients, thus supporting the health and function of the immune system. It helps the body repair damage to the skin and tissues and eases other physical discomforts, such as the symptoms of arthritis.

Burns
For minor burns, apply aloe vera gel to the affected area up to three times daily. You may also need to protect the area with gauze.
Sunburn
While aloe vera helps soothe sunburn, research shows that it’s not an effective way to prevent sunburn, so make sure you wear sun protection every day!
Small abrasions
If you’ve scuffed up your chin or forehead, you can apply aloe vera to the area for quick relief from pain and burning sensations. Use three times per day.
Cuts
If you’re used to grabbing Neosporin for a minor cut, consider trying aloe vera instead. Its molecular structure helps heal wounds quickly and minimizes scarring by boosting collagen and fighting bacteria. Apply up to three times per day.
Dry skin
Aloe vera gel absorbs easily, making it ideal for oily skin. However, it can help treat dry skin, too. Consider swapping out your regular moisturizer for aloe after bathing to help seal moisture into your skin.
Frostbite
Frostbite is a serious condition that requires emergency medical treatment. While aloe vera gel has been used historically as a frostbite remedy, ask your doctor first before trying it.
Cold sores
Unlike canker sores, cold sores develop on the outside of your mouth. Aloe vera may help treat the herpes virus, which is also the underlying cause of cold sores. Apply a small amount of the gel to your cold sore twice daily until it goes away.
Eczema
The moisturizing effects of aloe can help alleviate dry, itchy skin associated with eczema. Aloe vera gel may also help alleviate seborrheic dermatitis. While this oily form of eczema is most often found in the scalp, it can also affect parts of your face and behind the ears, too.
Psoriasis
As with eczema, aloe vera may help alleviate inflammation and itchiness from psoriasis. For best results, apply aloe vera gel twice daily to the affected area of skin.
10. Inflammatory acne
Due to the anti-inflammatory effects of aloe vera, the gel may help treat inflammatory forms of acne, such as pustules and nodules. Apply the gel with a cotton swab directly to the pimple three times daily.
For skin ailments, aloe vera extracts don’t work as well as gel. This is because the gel itself has moisturizing elements to protect and heal the skin.
White Lava Powder
Health benefits of Volcanic Ash on skin have been known for centuries by the native Melanesians - especially those that live near any of the nine (9) active volcanoes of Vanuatu. The benefits of Volcanic Ash on the skin extend to the treatment of a wide variety of infections due to its anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-yeast and overall disinfectant qualities. Volcanic Ash is high in Sulphur, an active Mineral ingredient which not only helps the body to resist bacteria but actually destroy it. Sulphur exists in your hemoglobin and connective body tissue:
to disinfect the blood;
stimulate bile secretion;
aid the oxidation reactions in the body
protect the protoplasm of cells; and
for the synthesis of Collagen (one of the main proteins needed for the structural integrity of your skin).
Sulphur slows down the aging process because of its ability to protect against the toxic effects of pollution and radiation. It is part of the chemical structure of the amino acids glutathione, taurine, cysteine, and methionine.
Volcanic Ash is truly Mother Nature's natural skin purifier. Not only is it rich in minerals, its exfoliating properties mean that it is ideal for removing the dead outer layers of skin as it cleanses the skin in the process. Volcanic ash particles are finely crushed and may be as small as 1/1,000th of an inch (or 0.025mm). The ash does not dissolve in water and so makes for a fantastic, mild exfoliant. We also use volcanic ash in our foot scrubs and body scrubs because of its purification and cleaning qualities.
Volcanic ash is quite similar to fine sand (silicon) and the mineral particles are tiny (easily (under 2 mm across). The ash is ejected from the mouth of the volcano, along with quite big, volcanic rocks. This plume of ash, rock and pumice also contains super-heated steam. This violet, volcanic activity (known as phreatic eruptions) shatters some of these rocks and the volcanic magma divides into very small particles. This plume erupting out of the volcano vent or vents results in these very fine particles of ash being scattered for long distances giving the appearance of a moon scape.
Volcanic ash mixed into the earth will bond to water, under pressure. Pure ash, mixed with spring or mineral water, is used to create mud baths (like in a spa) and facial mud masks.
Volcanic Ash is one of the best kept secrets of the Volcanic Earth Healing Centre Spa. It's uses the ash extensively in signature Volcanic Ash spa treatments to help address skin rashes, cellulite, blemishes, damaged skin, wrinkles, eczema, psoriasis, acne and even stretch marks. It is also EXCELLENT in exfoliating SOAPS, especially if you have oily skin.
Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM)
Methylsulfonylmethane, or MSM, is a naturally occurring compound in foods such as fresh vegetables, meat, and dairy products. MSM provides a source of natural sulfur, which plays a role in many of the body's processes
Typically, MSM supplements contain a synthetic form of MSM. The primary uses for MSM supplements include:
arthritis
joint pain
muscle recovery after exercise
allergy relief
Many of MSM's benefits have links to its anti-inflammatory action. Inflammation is a factor in many health conditions, including arthritis, allergies, and skin conditions. By reducing inflammation, MSM may be able to reduce or eliminate certain symptoms.
Treating osteoarthritis and joint pain
Osteoarthritis, which affects around 27 million people in the United States, is a deterioration of cartilage in one or more of the joints. It commonly affects the knees, hips, lower back, hands, and fingers. It can cause pain, stiffness, and swelling.
Promoting recovery after exercise
Regular exercise is necessary for good health. However, the energy demands of exercise can cause oxidative stress to muscles and tissues. This may result in temporary soreness and discomfort after a workout.
A study of 16 untrained healthy men which suggests that taking an MSM supplement helps reduce biomarkers of oxidative stress after exercise. It also increased the amount of antioxidant in their bodies.
Treating allergies
Nasal allergies, or allergic rhinitis, is an immune system response to something ordinarily harmless. Nasal allergies can cause sneezing, itching, watery eyes, and coughing when a person has exposure to an allergen, such as pollen, dust, animal dander, or mold.
In a double-blind study, people who took a daily dose of 3 g of MSM had reductions of more than 50 percent in their allergy symptoms.
Preventing or treating ulcers
Stomach ulcers, also known as gastric ulcers, are sores that occur in the stomach lining. They can cause symptoms including burning pain in the stomach, bleeding, vomiting, and weight loss.
A study in mice found that supplementing with MSM could help prevent gastric ulcers. The mice receiving the MSM had some protection of the mucus layer in the stomach, which becomes damaged by peptic ulcers.
The authors believe that MSM has anti-inflammatory properties that may help stop oxidative stress on the stomach's tissues.
Rosacea and inflammation of the skin
People may also use MSM topically, meaning by applying it to the skin. Some people believe that the anti-inflammatory power of MSM can help specific skin conditions when applied as a cream.
An older 2008 double-blind study of 46 people with rosacea found that they experienced improvement in their symptoms after using an MSM cream. The cream also contained silymarin, or milk thistle.
However, no larger or more recent studies have compounded these findings.
Despite its lack of medical studies, MSM is a natural source of sulfur, which could be beneficial to the skin. Dermatologists have long prescribed sulfur creams and washes to treat skin conditions, including rosacea and acne. Topical sulfur has natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.
For many people “looking good” is part of “feeling good,” which can help instill confidence that provides them with a competitive advantage. Healthy radiant skin is a sign of vibrant health and is often at the top of the “wish list” for people who want to look their best.
MSM is a rich source of sulfur — 34% by weight. Sulfur is a key component of collagen that supports the skin’s structural framework. Sulfur is also a building block of keratin, the chief structural constituent of hair and nails.*
Research has shown MSM provides positive benefits for the anti-aging and healthy skin. It appears MSM works through a few different mechanisms, although the exact pathways are still being studied and are not yet fully understood. First, MSM increases the body’s ability to fight oxidative stress, a major contributor to skin damage. Secondly, it can decrease damage done through internal inflammation, spurred by stress, dietary habits, or normal processes. And lastly, it is thought that MSM can improve the foundation of skin – collagen and other connective tissue proteins.
For years, anecdotal evidence suggested that MSM benefited skin health, but only recently did the scientific evidence come to support the claim. A clinical trial on MSM showed the benefits of oral supplementation on anti-aging. The study reported that 100% of participants taking MSM showed a decrease in the number of wrinkles, with an average reduction of 38%. Along with wrinkle reduction, the study also reported improvements in skin elasticity and firmness.
MSM is often utilized In topical formulations where the ingredients panel may reflect MSM as dimethyl sulfone. The combination of using MSM both topically and orally provides the synergistic effects of continuous support from the outside through topical application while bolstering the internal processes that lead to better long-term benefits through oral supplementation. The skin is complex and comprised of several layers. The topical application can benefit the outer layer, epidermis, and by supporting the underlying dermis and hypodermis layers, oral use of MSM helps maintain the long-term health of the skin.

Shea Butter
Extracted from the nuts of the shea tree (Vitellaria paradoxa) that is native to Africa, shea butter is a fatty oil that exists as a solid at room temperature.
The Karite tree bears the fruits, and the nuts inside the fruits are of prime importance. These nuts are crushed, boiled, and manipulated to extract a light-colored fat, which is commonly referred to as shea butter.
The main components of shea butter include oleic acid, stearic acid, linoleic acid, etc. It gets absorbed quickly into the skin as it melts at body temperature. Its moisturizing and healing properties prove beneficial for many skin issues. It also has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties (to a certain extent) that can be utilized to treat many ailments. Its similarity to many vegetable oils makes it suitable for ingestion
The tree was used to make coffins for the early kings in Africa, and the butter extracted from the nuts was used for its healing and skin care properties. The tree is also considered sacred by many tribes in Africa. It is still extensively used in Africa to protect the skin and hair from the harsh sun and dry winds.
It is rich in fats that make it an excellent emollient and skin moisturizing agent. Experiments also showed it has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. These can help reduce inflammatory skin diseases and the damage the skin and hair have undergone due to free radicals.

Together these help undo and prevent oxidative damage and help the skin re-build collagen
Exfoliating Skin
Consider adding rosehip oil to your routine as a face wash. Similar to sugar and sea salt, rosehip seed oil can work as a natural exfoliator when combined with baking soda. But steer clear if your skin is acne-prone, as this oil can further irritate already forming blemishes or clog pores.
Honey
The unique process that creates honey makes it especially valuable for cosmetic uses, such as clearing acne, healing scars, and evening out skin tone.
Raw honey is packed with components beneficial for your skin, especially if you have acne or autoimmune skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis. Even Candida overgrowth may be controlled by applying honey to your skin.
Raw honey helps balance the bacteria on your skin, which makes it a great product to use for acne. Manuka honey has been studied as an anti-acne product and found to be significantly more effective than other popular products.
Honey speeds up your skin cells’ healing processes. If you have blemishes or an eczema outbreak, honey that’s unpasteurized could speed healing and reduce inflammation. Manuka honey is so effective at healing wounds quickly that it’s now used by doctors in clinical settings.
Raw honey is also a natural exfoliator, which means applying it to your face takes off dry, dull skin and reveals new skin cells underneath.

Chlorophyll
Skin healing
Chlorophyllin has been shown to reduce inflammation and bacterial growth in skin wounds.
A 2008 review of wound care studies found that commercial ointments with papain-urea-chlorophyllin are more effective than other treatments. The ointment also reduced pain and healing time by half. Your doctor can prescribe this ointment.
Chlorophyllin may also be effective for mild to moderate acne
A natural deodorant
While chlorophyllin has been used since the 1940s to neutralize certain odors, studies are outdated and show mixed results of people with trimethylaminuria, a condition that causes fishy odors, found that chlorophyllin significantly decreased the amount of trimethylamines.
Charcoal
Charcoal is known for its ability to absorb and draw out oil from the skin. This makes charcoal a fantastic addition to soaps, scrubs, masks and more.
Activated charcoal, on the other hand, is most commonly used for medical, beauty or purification processes. To become “activated,” the charcoal goes through a high temperature steam activation process. This process increases its surface area, which increases the charcoal’s ability to absorb and filter. This makes activated charcoal the proper choice for medical and cosmetic use.
In particular, activated charcoal is fantastic for oily skin. Its ability to absorb oil and dirt from pores leaves skin feeling balanced.

Safe Earth Crystals (for deodorant)
Crystal deodorant is a type of alternative deodorant made of natural mineral salt called potassium alum, which has been shown to have antimicrobial properties. Potassium alum has been used as a deodorant in Southeast Asia for hundreds of years. Crystal deodorant has become more popular in Western cultures in the last 30 years. It has gained popularity due to its natural ingredients, low cost, and purported health benefits, such as lowering the risk of breast cancer.
The best time to apply the deodorant is right after you shower or bathe, when your underarms are freshly cleaned and still slightly damp. You can apply it to other body parts as well.
There may be a slight chalky residue left on your skin after application, so it’s a good idea to wait until the deodorant dries before getting dressed.
Crystal deodorant may be effective for up to 24 hours. If you wish to apply the deodorant in between showers, you can clean your underarm using rubbing alcohol and a cotton ball before reapplying.
Part of the allure of crystal deodorant is that you’re able to eliminate the chemicals that are found in conventional deodorant. Wearing deodorant and antiperspirant may inhibit the secretion of toxins from your body. Preventing your body from sweating naturally is thought to lead to clogged pores and a buildup of toxins.
You may find that you sweat more than usual once you make the switch from an antiperspirant to the crystal deodorant. The potential for increased body odor during this adjustment phase also exists. Usually your body will adjust after some time.
Crystal deodorant may cause rashes, itchiness, or irritation, especially if your skin is broken or you’ve recently shaved or waxed. It can also cause an allergic reaction such as inflammation, dryness, or redness. Avoid use when your skin is sensitive and discontinue use if the crystal deodorant continually irritates your skin.

St. John’s Wort
St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum) is a flowering plant in the Hypericaceae family named for its bright yellow flowers which were said to bloom for the first time around St. John the Baptist's birthday. The word "wort" means "plant" in Old English.
People have been using St. John's wort for centuries. Today, the popular herb is often used to ease the symptoms of depression.
Health Benefits
St. John's wort is widely believed to boost mood and provide some relief from depression, but it's not exactly clear how the plant achieves this.
Researchers suspect that ingredients in the herb (hypericin and hyperforin) may increase levels of certain brain chemicals, like serotonin. People with depression often have low levels of serotonin and other neurotransmitters.
One reason people may wish to try the natural remedy for depression (as opposed to antidepressants that can increase serotonin) is that St. John's wort tends to have fewer side effects than medications.
The herb is also being explored for the following health concerns:
Anxiety
Menopause-related symptoms
Premenstrual syndrome (PMS)
Seasonal affective disorder
Smoking cessation
An oil made from St. John’s wort has also been used topically for wound healing and a variety of other skin conditions such as eczema and hemorrhoids.
